Doc Strange's post using the image of Calvin Peeing (as above) inspired me to "mask up" as Masked Calvin and do a little blogging of my own.
I'm hoping some of my peers will speak up. We've been hearing from old-school who feel pushed out or disrespected, but a lot of us are young and are at LANL for a reason, and it isn't because we have no other offers. We are here because we want to do the work we can do best here, with the people that are here (for the moment).
I for one, want LANL to succeed. I want the people trying to bring LANL down to fail. There are many suspects, from the Hawks (the current administration, the Nuclear Navy, god knows who else) to the Doves (Liberals who dislike/fear big science and especially nuclear weapons).
I came here to do my life's work, my research. I believe there is a lot I can do to make the world a better place and that LANL could be the very best place to do it. I'm fed up with the whining I hear and the wing-nuts (Doug's term) who just want to see us torn down.
I'm pissed and you should be too! I want to hear from the rest of students, PostDocs, and early-career staff who want to see some change and are ready to stand up to make it happen.

Blogs are very "private" public spaces... all you have to do to avoid hearing the shrill sounds coming from them is to leave them (or not enter in the first place)?
I think all of the bloggers (not all of the commentors) *are* trying to encourage serious discussion about serious issues.
Doc Stranger-than-a-hatter might be a bit kinked in his humor but he (she/they/???) comes through to me as a genuinely sincere commentator even if his/her/it's major tool is satire and dark humor.
I agree that the blogs (and the lab, and the world) have a bad signal/noise ratio... but it is more better (I like to say it that way, it was not a grammatical accident) to increase the signal than to try to squelch the noise... (see Strangey's post "Whack-A-Blog")

Eric states often that he is a problem solver and wants to find solutions to our collective problems.
These blogs are open for brainstorming I think...
The fact that most of the discourse goes to hecking or flaming is sad, but there is still room for brainstorming.

How would you get brainstorming to work, especially on a blog?
In normal brainstorming meetings, there are a few people committed to working through the details of a problem until a viable, practical solution is found. Flaming is discouraged by peer pressure and by not allowing the flamers into the meeting in the first place.
How might productive brainstorming be done here?
Here is a seed for some brainstorming.
If the future career health of post docs at LANL is only protected by cooperative action (e.g. a professional union) but postdocs will not join such a union and will not devote time to it, how can postdocs protect themselves against divide and conquer strategies by management?

I think the answer to your first question is "easy".
"How do you get brainstorming to work on a blog" (to paraphrase)
Blogs can have multiple contributors and comments can be turned off or moderated. The multiple contributors might or might not allow comments except maybe during specific times, on specific topics.
If moderated, the comments which are flames (or flame-bait) can simply be deleted before they are posted.
The hard part is finding a group of motivated and engaged people.
The second question is a bit harder.

I have contemplated this since I watched Nanos go on his tirade (tantrum?) 3 years ago... I felt incredibly vulnerable, even though my mentor here was extremely supportive.
After a period of silence for Todd, perhaps I will top-post your question. While I *AM PISSED* am also interested in seeking constructive solutions. The flaming and sniping I've seen here and on most of the blogs is at best mildly entertaining. On the other hand, I hear even in the angry voices (including my own) the potential for something else.
